چکیده

History: A student nurse, aged 20, was admitted to the New Haven Hospital on October I3, I929, with a complaint of "earache". There was no history of exposure to Type I pneumococcus infection. One week before admission she developed a dry, nonproductive cough with an uncomfortable restricted feeling about the chest. There was no sore throat nor history of muscular or joint pains. On the morning of admission the patient was awakened by a severe pain in the left ear. The drum was incised that afternoon and she was admitted to the hospital, and except for slight anorexia there were no other symptoms. She had never had any illness of a similar nature previous to the present admission. There was a history of measles, German measles, and pertussis in early childhood. She had a tonsillectomy performed in I9I6, had influenza in I9I8 and again in I927, and had suffered from asthma with hay-fever in 1925. There was no history of scarlet fever, pneumonia, or diphtheria. The family history was irrelevant.

Ultrastructural characteristics of the round window membrane during pneumococcal otitis media in rat.

To understand better the pathogenesis of inner ear (IE) damage caused by otitis media (OM), the round window membrane(RWM) structure was investigated in a rat model for pneumococcal otitis media (POM). The RWM of 25 rats were evaluated light and electron microscopically on 1 day, 3 days, 6 days, 10 days, and 20 days after the unilateral inoculation of type 3 pneumococcus suspension into their m...

Pneumococcus: the sugar-coated bacteria.

The study of Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) had been a central issue in medicine for many decades until the use of antibiotics became generalized. Many fundamental contributions to the history of microbiology should credit this bacterium: the capsular precipitin reaction, the major role this reaction plays in the development of immunology through the identification of polysaccharid...

Interim results of an ecological experiment — Conjugate vaccination against the pneumococcus and serotype replacement

Streptococcus pneumoniae has more than 95 serotypes, each of which presumably can cause sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia, and acute otitis media. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV) targeted against a limited number of serotypes have nonetheless revealed an impressive impact on each manifestation of pneumococcal disease. At the same time, growing evidence of significant non-vaccine type (NVT) re...
